Scarring is the most horrible postimpact of acne. It not only devastates one’s external appearance, but also leaves a traumatic aftermath in the victim’s mind. Knowing acne scar types is an important issue because acne scar treatment, to a large extent, depends on its different categories. This acne scar type is also known as hypertrophic scars. Meaning of the term hypertrophic is overgrowth or enlargement. Keloids are formed due to overgrowth of collagen.

There are two types of acne scars: pigmented scars, which leave behind a purplish-brown mark once the blemish goes away, and ice pick scars, which leave small holes in the skin. An average whitehead isn’t likely to cause a scar because it normally doesn’t become inflamed. Picking at spots increases the likelihood of scarring as it can introduce bacteria, causing an infection.

Essentially there are a couple of different types of acne scars. The simplest scar is nothing more than a spot of skin bearing a brown, pink or purple colour, testimony to the fact that a pimple had been there. The other scar type is known as an ice pick scar.  The name ice pick comes from the fact that if you look at this type of acne scar the would looks like it was inflicted by an ice pick, The thing to keep in mind is that scars are only formed if the skin lesion are allowed to become inflamed.

Increased Tissue Formation

Scars resulted by this type are caused due to the building up of collagen in the skin. There are two types of acne scars which results from increased tissue formation and they are:-
Hypertrophic Scars

These types of scars are common in the young people with dark skin. These scars are not completely prevented and some people have inherited tendency to these scars.
Keloid Scars

Keloid scars can be caused on any part of the body including the shoulders and upper chest. This type of scars is more common in dark skin people.

Ice Pick Scars: Deep pitting scars which are not only the most classic type of acne scarring but also the most common type.

Box Car Scars: These are an angular type of scarring that most often occurs on the cheeks and temples. These can be shallow in depth or very deep and resembles chickenpox scars.

Hypertrophics Scars
: These are thickened scars which are generally higher than the surrounding skin and are also called keloid scars.
