Laser Treatment for Rosacea
Rosacea is a common skin disease that causes redness and swelling on the face. Often referred to as “adult acne,” rosacea may begin as a tendency to flush or blush easily, and progress to persistent redness in the center of the face that may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose. The chest ears and back areas may also be affected. As the disease progresses, small blood vessels and tiny pimples begin to appear on and around the reddened area; however, unlike acne, there are no blackheads.
Physician Experience Is Essential
Treating the diffused generalized redness of rosacea requires some skill as opposed to treating the linear facial veins. If one over-treats an area, one can see the footprints of the laser treatment. Circular marks can be seen where the laser passed with over-treatment, so it takes skill to treat it properly. If a patient gets over-treated it can give the illusion that they have been scarred, but they’re not actually scarred. The reason for this is that people with very light skin, like me, get most of the color in their skin from this redness. If a doctor over-treats that redness it can leave white marks that look like scarring, but in fact are the skin’s normal color. The way to fix this, believe it or not, is to get additional laser treatments. It is very important to see a physician who is experienced in using lasers when treating rosacea.
CoolGlide XEO treatments are quick, have minimum discomfort and allow you to return to your normal life immediately. Unlike other treatments there is no need to apply gels or topical anesthetic. During the treatment, it will initially feel cool as the XEO handpiece is placed on the skin. When the light pulses a brief, mild pinching sensation occurs. Treatment time depends on the size of the area treated.
Avoid hot drinks, spicy foods, caffeine, and alcoholic beverages. It’s important to note that although alcohol may worsen a case of Rosacea, symptoms may be just as severe in someone who doesn’t drink at all. This condition has been incorrectly linked to alcoholism.
Practice good sun protection. This includes limiting exposure to sunlight, wearing hats and using broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPF of 15 or higher daily, and avoiding extreme hot and cold temperatures, which may exacerbate the symptoms of Rosacea.
Anticipated result of the procedure:
Rosacea treatments are all aimed to control the intensity of this disorder. The treatments should reduce the appearance of the red, irritated, acne like breakouts brought on by rosacea. The treatments will help patients suffering from this condition to feel more attractive, to more readily take part in social functions, and to feel more comfortable with their self-image.
Procedure Description:
Long-term treatment (5 to 8 weeks or more) with oral antibiotics such as tetracycline may control skin eruptions. Oral medications similar to vitamin A (isoretinol or Accutane) are a stronger alternative.
The treatment of skin eruptions may also include long-term treatment with topical (applied to a localized area of the skin) antibiotics such as metronidazole. In severe cases, laser surgery may help reduce the redness. Surgical reduction of enlarged nose tissue may also improve the patient’s appearance.
