Tea tree oil is an oil extracted from the leaves of the Australian Melaleuca Alternafolia tree. It has powerful anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral qualities.

Tea tree oil has been traditionally used for thing such as athletes foot, body odor, bad breath, cold sores, and yes it has been traditionally used topically for acne.

In fact it has been proven effective killing acne bacteria when topically applied. And because of that it is often used as a replacement to benzoyl peroxide in many of the “natural” acne treatments.

Treatment for Tea Tree Oil for Acne

This is an essential oil derived from the leaves of the tree called Australian Melaleuca Alternafolia. Apart from its strong antibacterial and antifungal traits, this natural substance is also widely recognized for its beneficiary roles in treating bad breath, cold sores, body odor etc. Terpinen-4-ol is the main constituent of this oil which is believed to be the playing the role of the chief antimicrobial ingredient. Also it is a renowned fact that an acne lesion is inflamed by the presence of skin-dwelling bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes.

Before determining which products to purchase or what regimen of tea tree oil for acne treatment will be most helpful in individual cases of skin problems, it will be beneficial to know what causes blemishes in the first place. Many persons in the past have related blemish and skin problems with uncleanliness. But, the truth is that pimples, blackheads and whiteheads are the products of over-active glands found near the hair follicle.

Tea tree oil has become extremely popular over the last few years. During studies preformed by health care professionals it was shown to be more effective in killing bacteria (such as staph bacteria) then many popular man made antibiotics. Additional studies have shown that benzoyl peroxide is less effective in treating acne then tea tree oil as it can leave the skin red and irritated while tea tree oil does not.

To use this great blemish fighter all that you need to do is apply one drop two to three times per day to any areas of your skin that is affected and it will begin to kill the bacteria. The are also many great facial and body cleansing products that contain tee tree oil that you can use in combination with tea tree oil. There are also blemish sticks and pressed powders that contain this natural acne treatment so women suffering from blemishes do not have to worry about their makeup making their skin worse.

As an acne treatment, tea tree oil is usually used either as a concentrated spot treatment, or a diluted face wash. In my experience, using 100% tea tree oil as a spot treatment is the most effective route. Applying a few drops of tea tree oil directly to acne spots can kill the underlying bacteria and dry up the inflamed region, sometimes as quickly as overnight. Most users find that the drying is not as severe as with other acne products that use benzoyl peroxide, and tea tree oil will not bleach your clothing either (plus it’s less expensive, and a small amount will last much longer).

Make a tea tree oil mask which can be applied once or twice a week to help control acne break-outs. Add one or two drops of tea tree oil to enough natural green clay powder to make a mask, adding enough water to make a thick paste. Apply the paste evenly to your face and neck and leave for 30 minutes. Additionally, you can use this mask to spot treat pimples, leaving the mask on overnight.
